Reykjavik Energy Orders Five 45-MW Geothermal Power Plants
Probably the Largest Single Order of Its Kind
Reykjavik, Iceland − Reykjavik Energy (Orkuveita Reykjavikur) has ordered five 45 megawatt (MW) geothermal power plants from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), in a consortium with Balcke-Durr GmbH, a German engineering company. It is believed that the 225 MW order is the largest single order of its kind ever.
Deliveries of the plants will begin in October 2010 and be completed by February 2012. The five plants will be built in a geothermal field approximately 30 kilometers east of Reykjavik. The power from the new plants will be used both for industrial and domestic use.
MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works will manufacture the steam turbines; Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will make the generators, and Balcke-Durr will fabricate the cooling equipment.
Comments:
Mr. Hjörleifur B Kvaran CEO & President Reykjavik Energy / Reykjavik Energy Invest:
Iceland already generates nearly all its electricity from renewable energy and uses virtually no fossil fuels such as coal and oil for power production. This order is another example of our commitment to increasing the use of this clean, sustainable energy.
